The belief behind it is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, where churning of ocean by gods and demons led to nectar being spilled into four different locations on earth. These locations are Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain – all situated along major rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari & Shipra respectively. During each Kumbh Mela held at these places every 12th year or so depending upon astrological calculations; millions take part in various rituals including bathing in the sacred river.
